It was not jokes and wishful thinking but the hard work of Chinese-American scholars and activists who made life better for Chinese-Americans. While Ho Davies thanks many real-life Chinese-American academics and writers like Anthony B. Chan and Frances Kai-Hwa Wang in his acknowledgments, there are no major characters in the novel who play this important role.
