Writing to Save the World

Date and time:4/3/23 6:00 PM - 6:55 PM ET

Location: Virtual Session Zoom

Speakers:Frances Wang

Description:

How do we use our writing to create real world change? How do we find our voices and get our message out? How do we use writing to touch, inspire, persuade, and provoke readers to action? Learn simple but powerful methods to get the ideas out of our heads and onto the page. We will consider different forms including Op-Ed, persuasive essay, spoken word, social media, and art. Part writing, part activism, a lot of heart, this class aspires to use the written word to create the change you want to see in the world. Bring a notebook and pen.

Learn How to Publish in Magazines

Date and time:4/3/23 7:00 PM - 7:55 PM ET

Location: Virtual Session Zoom

Speakers:Frances Wang

Description:

Publishing articles in magazines and newspapers is a great way to get started as a published writer, and maybe make a little extra income, too. How do you get an article or essay published in a magazine or newspaper? Do you need to write the whole article first or just a pitch? Should you blog? How do you develop a relationship with an editor? We will discuss where to find a magazine's submission guidelines, how to write a pitch, how to approach an editor, and the power of photographs, data, and infographics. What do you need to know about copyright and style guides? How do you use social media and hyperlinks to promote your articles? What to expect in the publishing process. Bring a notebook and pen.

Jumpstart your memoir

Date and time:4/4/23 6:00 PM - 6:55 PM ET

Location: Virtual Session Zoom

Speakers:Frances Wang

Description:

Whether you want to write a memoir for your loved ones or sort through your favorite memories, why not start today, one word, one story at time? Discuss the difference between a memoir and an autobiography. Share techniques to overcome barriers to writing. Short writing and reading exercises to remember the past and make sense of the present. If you can tell your story, you can write your story! Bring a notebook and a pen.

The ABC's of publishing

Date and time:4/4/23 7:00 PM - 7:55 PM ET

Location: Virtual Session Zoom

Speakers:Frances Wang

Description:

This course is an introduction to the many paths to publishing, whether book or article or story or poem. Maybe you have finished writing the next great American novel or perhaps you have an idea for a great children's picture book. How do you go about getting it published? Do you need an agent? Do you need to finish writing the whole book first, or is a proposal enough? Do you need to find an illustrator for your children's picture book? What about self-publishing? What about magazines? What is a chapbook? Should you blog? How important is social media in securing a book contract?
